#9 This one is a little abstract but try to follow me here. The top of the drawing is like John at the beginning of the story, solid, strong, put together. Then this idea comes along that shatters his ideas and perceptions, it breaks him, disperses his mind (the research in the south). After his study is complete he reconstructs himself to be something new, something bigger, something different, like the bottom of the drawing.
