Javanese and Balinese are modern variants of the old Kawi script, a Brahmic script introduced to Java along with Hinduism and Buddhism. Kawi is first attested in a legal document from 804 CE. It was widely used in literature and translations from Sanskrit from the tenth century; by the seventeenth, the script is identified as carakan. A Latin orthography based on Dutch was introduced in 1926, and has largely supplanted the carakan.

Shibori is a traditional Japanese textile art dating back to the 8th century. The artist first creates a design & then the cloth is stitched, bound, resisted, wrapped or gathered by hand. Any number of these methods are used on one piece and often involves a dozen different techniques. The cloth is then dyed in natural dyes such as indigo, bark, roots, leaves, insects or resins. For each color, dozens of steps have to be altered, re-stitched, gathered etc.& complicated processes repeated
