The pregnant female #BlackSoldierFly will lay between 400 and 900 eggs. Eggs of the Black Soldier Fly are not laid directly on the food source the way housefly eggs are laid. The female Black Soldier Fly will seek a location in close proximity to a suitable food source or near a colony of active Black Soldier Fly larvae. These eggs hatch into juvenile larvae in about 4 days
In the wild the juvenile larvae would burrow into the soil to find suitable warmth in order to over-winter. Temperatures at about 50F will cause the larvae to go completely dormant. If the temperature drops below about 35F for more than 4 hours unprotected juvenile larvae will typically perish. Likewise if the temperature of an active bed goes above 113F for more than a couple of hours juvenile larvae will die.
The juvenile stage will also be extended during cooler weather when the temperature falls below F. When the temperature drops below you will likely find your juvenile BSFL will slow down or stop eating and moving as they enter a near hibernation state.
Over the course of their three to four week life as a juvenile larva they will progress through several stages shedding their outer skin as they become larger with each stage of development. Juvenile larvae range in size from to inches.
Black Solider Fly from egg to adult Black Soldier Flies spend the majority of their life as larvaeduring which time they feed voraciously on almost any energy rich food storing that energy for their short reproductive adult life.
