Ottoman karabala hilt sword, late 15th to early 16th century blade, 18th century silver mounts bearing the tughra of Sultan Ahmed III (r.1703-30), steel blade inscribed in Arabic "Although it lies in the belly of the scabbard, the sword only accomplishes its duty when it is naked", chiselled with split-palmette motif, marine-ivory hilt with silver-gilt cross guard with repoussé foliate motifs, scabbard with gilt-lock and chape decorated with engraved and punched floral stems.
