John Rickman’s plan of the destruction of the Palace of Westminster, drawn four days after the fire of 16th October 1834. The brown hatched area shows the burnt out parts. Rickman, a senior Parliamentary official, watched the progress of the fire from his house, labelled ‘Rickman’ at the top of the plan. The old House of Commons is in the centre of the picture, and the House of Lords just below it to the left. It's clear from this diagram how narrowly Westminster Hall escaped destruction.
