Gartloch Mental Hospital, Gartloch, Scotland. Built in 1889 and closed in 1996, it once was a "home for pauper lunatics" (that's how it was described in the building's charter). The village of Gartloch exists mostly because of the hospital. People moved there to build it and later others came to work there.
The Pavilion building, built in 1885, was originally an Asylum for women. It handled the overflow from the Asylum on Roosevelt Island, and typically received chronic cases. In the 1970s, it was last used as a drug rehab facility called Phoenix House. People have reported all kinds of paranormal phenomena here, such as hearing voices and seeing apparitions.
