How to Plant Garlic | school, neck | *PLANTING GARLIC* - I often mention that I love to grow garlic. Why?! It's truly one of the easiest things to grow in the garden! There are two types of... | By Wyse Guide | So, we are walking to the garden and what are we going to do? We're going to do something you keep asking for. Plant garlic. I always think garlic is like the gateway thing to plant for a garden. You know why? It's super easy like the easiest thing and what's really odd about it? Now, it kind of all depends what zone you're in. I'm in zone five. A lot of the cooler zones like this. You can plant garlic in the fall. I like to plant it about when school starts up because it gives it a head start. It's hardy enough to last through the winter. Planting it in the fall means it starts it's growing gets roots in and then next year puts on a much bigger bulb than it would otherwise so how do you plant garlic well guess what you can plant the garlic you planted the prior year so start by buying a garlic you like buy a good organic garlic I love seed savers for garlic I also love Baker Creek seeds for garlic just a good source and what you want to do in successive years or if there's a big bin of garlic somewhere that you can buy and plant look for the biggest bulbs. So, this is some of my garlic from last year that I harvested and I've cut and as you can see, a really small clove of garlic. We'll give you a smaller bulb of garlic, a bigger clove will give you a bigger bulb. So, every year, I'm kind of creating my own garlic because every year, I'm picking the best heads to plant. You can see I've already started, I think so far, I have like 77 cloves planted. So, to plant this garlic, you want to start with a good soil. I have a good mixture in my raised beds. I do have a top soil on here. It's mixed with a good compost. When I plant garlic, I do not fertilize it because since I plant mine in the fall, you don't want to fertilize things in the fall because they're going to be going into a dormant period. So, I'm not going to fertilize this until spring and then I just fertilize it with like a blood meal which is what you want to fertilize any bulbs with even flower bulbs. So, to do that, I take my garlic, take off some of the wrapping and I just start taking it apart and what I'm doing is just taking apart all those cloves and that's what you each one of these is going to give me a head of garlic. That's what's wonderful about garlic. It's super easy. I know in the past when I've told people about garlic and I've asked them what went wrong and they'll say, well, I took the whole thing home and I just planted it. Well, that would just give you like a weird Franken garlic bulb thing. You don't want to do that. I'm taking this apart. I'm going to plant all these individual ones and make sure even if they're in one casing, sometimes, you know what? Like this one has two cloves within this and it looks like it'd be one but there's two. So, you want to take them all apart. There are two types of garlic in the world. Well, actually, there's many varieties but there's two types. Hard neck, which is this. It has a hard neck or soft neck. The main difference is hard neck, I think has better flavor and it does not keep as long. This is going to keep about maybe four months in your storage whereas a soft neck could keep a lot longer without sprouting. Hard neck after four months can just start shriveling it up and kind of go to nothing but I like the flavor of them better and they give you much bigger heads which I like. So, to plant it, you could, if you to make a big trough with your hand kind of like you do seeds and just lay them in there since I have good raised bed soil all I do is sit here and I push them in like that push it in like so and I'm going to go all along here make my rows you want to put them as far apart as big ahead of garlic gets so it's about four to 6 inches on all sides and that's going to give you look how big some of these head guys that's one that is one little clove of garlic not little but that's going to give you a huge beautiful head of garlic that's why every year if you plant your own and you select the best big bulbs to grow and then the best cloves to grow. That's why it's best. Now, don't feel bad. If you have a smaller clove, still put it in the ground. That is no big deal. Like this is a little bit smaller one. It's still going to give me a head of garlic. It just may not be as big as some of those other ones. I'm going to finish putting this row in and then, we're going to cover 'em up and finish up. See, I know. I know. You're surprised how easy this is. Why you or out and plant garlic. So, I have at the moment about 88 planted. I may do a few more but I have some on mail order. They're not here. So, for now, this is what I'm going to do and you know, I, you know, I know I'm going to get questions from you. What do you do with all that garlic? That's not that much. I use that much garlic and of course, I give it to family. I give some to friends but like not too much because I use a lot of it. So, I have it all planted. A lot of this exposed so I'm just going to cover it up with that soil and just you see, I planted it about two inches deep just so the clove is completely under and you just see a little bit of that tail on top coming out. So, I'm covering it up a lot of people don't realize that garlic is that heavy that it can withstand a lot of that winter because it really does give it a lot better hold than for the next year if you can plant it like that because if you plant it just in the spring, it doesn't have that long growing season to get a nice, big head on it. So, I do like to just cover it up slightly with I just pick up some leaves and mulch in slightly and I just put them over the top. I, one, this compost down. As you can see, it's already starting to want to compost. That's great because it's going to add a lot of nutrients but more so, it's going to just give a slight protection to the bulbs over the winter and guys, I live in Iowa. It can get hot harsh here. We can have polar vortexes. We can have really the worst of the worst or the best of the best. I've never lost garlic. I've never had it die because of the winter but I just like to top dress it slightly and you will be so shocked. I will show you on stories in a few weeks. These are going to have green sprouts coming up. Yeah, already. I know and they're going to ready to go. That's all you do to plant garlic. Plant it in the fall. Fertilize in the spring with some blood meal and then about June, it kind of depends where you live but when all the greens on a third of all the greens that starts turning brown, usually they're about ready. You pull it, you let it cure and dry. I'll do a video on that next year so you know what to do but super easy. Go find garlic. Find a local grower even after at your farmers market. Hey, can I plant this garlic? They're going to let you know. Share this around everybody. Tag people. I love to see you guys share this around because that's how you help me help you help more people. So, let's go plant some garlic. You know what? You don't need to kiss anybody. Eat a whole bunch of garlic.
