Small Bites and Movement

A few weeks ago, I shared a lesson from my friend, Sandy called, N.O.W. (News of the Week). Click HERE to read more about that lesson. (click on picture) One of the problems with this lesson is it can be overwhelming for students who either aren't on grade level or students who have trouble with focusing. So, the lesson was modified. (click on picture) One way to help students focus better, is to make this flap book: Cut a file folder into strips. The shorter the attention span, the smaller…

March Madness

March Madness has something to do with basketball, right?? It makes me think of the countdown till spring break and how quickly the days pass after it. I told someone today that being in my class was like heaven on earth. They are so wonderful, I can't even think about June when they will leave me for grander horizons. I need it all to slow down! Saw this wonderful idea on Pinterest and knew I had to use it: I couldn't find the original person that uploaded it but kudos to whoever you are :)…

Timeouts and Tootsie Rolls

An alternative to exit tickets is to give each student a form called an "I Can Statement" form. This form can be given to students each Monday in order for them to document what they have learned during the week. There is a section for them to self-evaluate their learning and a space for them to show or explain what they "can" do. At the beginning of a lesson, I have the students write down their "I Can" statement for the lesson in the space provided. This gives them the opportunity to hear…

Elementary Literacy Resources

Here is a sample of our ever changing Data Wall. The kids add a sticker every time they get a 100% on their spelling tests. As you can see from the sticker chart, we went from less that 50% of the kids achieving a 100% to almost 100% once we started keeping track of the data! The other charts consist of Excel graphs made up of various pieces of classroom data. The post-it notes on the graphs are the students "thinking" in regards to the data. This wall became a great motivational tool for my…

Fabulous Common Core Resource - Math Coach's Corner

One of the things that’s great about the Common Core State Standards is that they are, well, common. That means that great educational minds across the country are all working on resources for the same standards. I was researching one of the math standards, and I stumbled on the work that North Carolina has done. […]
