55003 (D9003) "MELD" was taken out of service on the last day of 1980 and dispatched to Doncaster Works for scrapping on the same day - it is seen here at the rear of Doncaster Works on Saturday 21st February 1981 awaiting the cutters torch after the removal of all re-useable components. Work has started in Hayes, Bridgend scrapyard, on the destruction of the Southern Railway’s finest. The two Bulleid ‘Light Pacific’s’ having the torch taken to them in July 1966 are ‘BB’ 4-6-2 no.34075 ‘264 Squadron’ and re-built ‘BB’ no.34062 ’17 Squadron’. 34075 was withdrawn after just under 16 years and 34062 a year longer at 17 years and 3 months. In the late'60's we went round as many scrapyards as sheds, chasing steam locomotives.
