Africa | Royal stool from the Asante people of Ghana | Wood, silver repoussé | ca. 1860 | Among Ghana's Akan peoples, including the Asante, the stool symbolizes royal authority and is a personal object connected to the soul of its owner. This stool, believed to have belonged to the Asante king Kofi Kakari (18371884), was confiscated from his palace by British colonial authorities in 1873.
