Shades of Green Plants like azaleas and daylilies have their seasons to flower but also play a part in the design when foliage is the main star. In this serene garden, a fern on a pedestal is the finishing touch in a planting bed that features tonal, textural and height changes, in addition to the structural quality of the tree trunks. Disney world does this! Lowes sells the 4 to 6" round PVC pipe with holes already drilled. Purchase an end cap, fill with rock, soil, and plant. I will often put these in the center of a very large pot to stabilize, and add amazing height and color to a container that has trailing plants (no end cap or rock needed if you are placing in a container)
Keep the fern in the same pots they come in, every other day submerge them in a 5 gallon bucket filled with 1/2 cup of epson salts & 3 gallons of regular water until the soil stops bubbling, then hang up to drip dry... ferns will be dark green, glossy, and 3x3 by September from ferns that start out with 7 fronds in May.
