Dating Antique Bottles by Mold Seams

Bottles were so widely used for so many purposes and dating them can be a frustrating experience for the novice collector. Seams are a reliable guide to age due to changes in how bottles were made. When bottles were free blown into molds, the bottle was made first then a lip was added. Since the lips were made last, they have no mold seams.

1960's Vintage Cobalt Blue Glass Square Apothecary Bottle. Could have been used as a medicine bottle or poison bottle. This is in excellent condition and has no chips or cracks. It measures 4 in. tall and 2 in. square. A number 2 is embossed on the bottom of the jar.

A cute little wide mouthed mustard bottle in a beautiful purple color. This is over 100 years old, dug up from a landfill. It has been cleaned and is ready for display. This has bubbles, seams and other imperfections, including a little chip on the inside lip. An interesting feature....this does not sit absolutely flat.
