Herculaneum atrium with intact compluvium (hole in the ceiling for rain) and impluvium (porous rock basin that collected the rain water and filtered it into a cistern) Ercolano atrio con compluvium intatta (foro nel soffitto per la pioggia) e impluvium (bacino di roccia porosa che raccoglieva l'acqua piovana e filtrato in una cisterna).
The ancient town of Herculaneum was destroyed by the same eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (79 A.D.) that destroyed Pompeii. The difference is that while Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was covered in mud which better preserved the many buildings and mosaics. Herculaneum is smaller and lesser known, but is a fantasic place. It is a short train ride from Naples. Double click to view on black.
