kids get to write letters to other students during writing time is they want and put it in the mailbox. teacher or student checks and delivers mail to people at the end of the day. students can write back to the person the next day. Have a folder set up for writing paper, envelopes, stickers to close envelope or fake stamp, post cards, and sample questions the students could ask another student to give them a way to start their conversation.
