March 1762 – French Huguenot Jean Calas, who had been wrongly convicted of killing his son, dies after being tortured by authorities; the event inspired Voltaire to begin a campaign for religious tolerance and legal reform.
New York Slave Revolt, 1712. About 23 African slaves decided to revolt and killed 9 white people, while injuring 6 more. Dozens of arrests of blacks resulted. Several of them committed suicide while in jail. To intimidate other slaves into submission, 21 were executed; 20 by being burned to death; the remaining 1 was killed on the breaking wheel. This uprising resulted in passage of tougher slave codes by NY state legislature.
