My greatgrandfather moved to the Dutch Indies at the beginning of the 20th century, he married my grandmother while she was still in the Netherlands. They married "with the glove", a marriage when the couple are far away from each other. While the First World War was still going on my greatgrandmother risked German submarines to make the long journey from Holland to the Dutch Indies via America. Hotel des Indes was one of the oldest and most prestigious hotels in Asia. Located in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (modern day Jakarta, Indonesia), the hotel had accommodated countless famous patrons throughout its existence from 1829 to 1971. Studio: Charls & Van Es & Co. - Batavia (now 'Jakarta', Indonesia) Johann Friedrich Charls (1859 Germany - 1933 Dutch East Indies) and Jacobus Cornelis van Es (1842 Holland - 1925 Dutch East Indies) established a studio in Soerabaja (Surabaya) in 1884.
