"Portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam", 1523 by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543). Paper mounted on pine, 36,8 x 30,5 cm Kunstmuseum, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel Erasmo, nascido em 1469, entrou no monastério de Steyn, e foi ordenado em 1492. Em 1517, o papa Leão X concedeu-lhe o privilégio de não-obrigatoriedade de usar indumentárias monásticas, o que justifica o uso de roupas universitárias no quadro.
