The ADRENALINE JUNKIE Generally speaking, Barbados is the perfect island for water sport enthusiasts but if we had to narrow it down we’d definitely pinpoint Silver Sands as the go-to beach for that water-based adrenaline rush. Several shops, including deAction Beach Shop run by board-legend, Brian Talma, offer world-class facilities for windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddle.
The SHOPAHOLIC Inventive craft vendors peddle a variety of souvenirs and beachwear, including kitschy jewellery made from local materials like seashells and coral; as well beach bags and cover-ups to complete any beach ensemble. For those more interested in tickling their tastebuds, the full range of Tobagonian sweets and treats – from sugar cake to fruit preservatives – are always available from non-invasive vendors who sit back and wait for you to come to them.
SOCIAL BUTTERFLY People make the trek to Maracas Bay for Richard’s Bake and Shark (or Patsy’s or Asha’s or Uncle Sam’s) but they stay for the lime. In true Trini style, the act of hanging out with friends (commonly referred to as ‘liming’) seems to exist in such perpetuity that we’re confident even if you dared to venture to this beach alone you’d inevitably bump into a few familiar faces upon arrival.
The RECLUSE Englishman’s Bay has long since lost its status as one of Tobago’s best kept secrets but somehow it has managed to maintain its reputation as being the go-to beach for solitude.
THE FOODIE Hellshire Beach is the destination for a great party atmosphere on weekends but we love it for the food any day of the week. Unpretentious thatched roof seafood restaurants with sand covered floors offer visitors an array of meal options, including steamed or fried fish and lobster with a side of bammy, festival or vegetables. Prendy’s is a local favorite but we also recommend Thelma and Ian’s as they also provide generous servings and delicious food.
The NIGHT OWL Live entertainment is never in short supply in the Caribbean but we rate the quality and variety of the show at Harbor Lights Nightclub on Carlisle Bay Beach. The beach extravaganza takes place every Monday and Wednesday, featuring steelbands, fire breathers, moko jumbies and dancers going lower than you could imagine under flaming limbo bars.
The COUPLE Barbados is one of the most popular islands for destination weddings and Bottom Bay is becoming a prime location for couples to say ‘I do’. It could be the magnificent stretch of pristine white sand, the breathtaking panoramic view of the south shore, or the fact that the strong currents make it a scenic yet imperfect spot for swimming, but this unspoiled strip of coastline is definitely favored for romantic picnics and the occasional wedding.
The EXHIBITIONIST With more nude beaches than any other Caribbean island its no surprise that our pick for the ideal strip of sand to stroll along au naturale, would be in Jamaica. So, for those 100% comfortable in their own skin and seeking a more intimate setting where they can literally bare it all, we think this islet in Negril is just right.
The ALCOHOL AFICIONADO The truth is you’d be hard pressed to find a beach in the Caribbean that isn’t great for indulging in a drink or two. With postcard perfect views stretching out on either side of you, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville just a stone’s throw away, comfortable cabanas and the remodeled country-style Margaritaville Party Bus transporting you to and from your hotel, we feel we’ve stumbled upon the ideal cocktail for those who believe in the mantra ‘It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere’.
