Happy New Year! (a little early:))

Hello Everyone! I know! It may be a little early to talk about the new year, but I wanted to share a little unit I just put together. I am actually surprising myself by getting this organized already. I am not normally one to be ahead of the game! But I guess, as crazy busy as it has been at school so far, this is going to help me feel prepared for 2013. The week we get back from winter break is a short one, so this unit is only 33 pages long with two reader's response craft connections…

I want to use this poem for my first or second graders who have a lot things they like. Maybe they can make wonderful poems if they learn about rhyming.

Daily Five - Read to Someone-Poetry Collections

Hello Everyone! More Daily Five stuff! :) "Read to Someone" is a component that my firsties love!! We practice over and over how it should look and sound. We practice sitting EEKK style, reading quietly, sharing, asking questions, etc. Many ask what my kids read during "Read to Someone." Most of the time they are sharing books from their book baskets, but at least once a week, they read poetry together. We build a collection of poems in a folder starting from day one of first grade! Many of…

Best Practices 4 Teaching--Sharing Educational Successes: Daggum Duct Tape and Kindness

Daggum Duct Tape and Kindness

I did it. I took the plunge. I bought some of that neat and nifty, really cool duct tape. I thought 'what the hey' and bought one of everything. I have a roll with peace symbols , cheetah print , butterfly printed , and I even bought one of the rolls below. I have no idea what I plan to do with it. I bought it as a tribute to Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade. I mustache her if she has seen this type of duct tape. I have to confess that it sort of makes me think of Pringles in a can!! My plan is…

Back to School is coming!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I know - it's a scary thought reality!!!! I'm sorry to even say the words......Back to School. But let's be honest. It's not that far away now, and closer for some than for others. So let's start thinking about how we can prepare. I don't know about you, but I have been stalking Target, Hobby Lobby and a few other places all summer long looking for the best deals and the cutest little bins, buckets, and supplies. Why, oh why, do we teachers spend so much dang money on our…
