The mutoscope was a rival to Edison's kinetoscope that debuted in 1895. Created by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, the mutoscope featured photographic images which were rotated by the viewer with a crank to suggest movement. Its advantages over the kinetoscope were its better image quality as well as its lower manufacturing costs.
