Besides just art along the Silk Road I'll try to explore the connections between East and West here; ancient mostly and perhaps some more recent. You really can’t overestimate the search for commodities and the influence of trade routes in shaping our history and culture. Columbus was seeking an alternative to the old Silk Road when he bumped into the Americas. Via Silk Road traveled both evils such as plague and gun powder as well as ideas and inventions like the printing press. And how about fossil fuels shaping our economy and politics today?

A major art exhibit opens in New York this week. Hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it features artifacts that span five millennia of culture. Much of the art is on display after being hidden for the past quarter-century of Afghanistan's tumultuous history, and presumed destroyed or stolen.

Most merchants did not travel the entire Silk Road but would trade goods through middlemen based in Oasis towns such as Khotan or Dunhuang. The Sogdians, however, established a trading network across the 1500 miles from Sogdiana to China. In fact, the Sogdians turned their energies to trade so thoroughly that the Saka of the Kingdom of Khotan called all merchants suli, "Sogdian", whatever their culture or ethnicity.

The Beauty of Loulan and the Tattooed Mummies of the Tarim Basin

Loulan was discovered in 1980, but it was 3800 years ago that she died on the trade route known as the Silk Road. The natural dryness and salty soil preserved her and over two hundred other mummies, individuals who had lived in several closely located settlements along the trade route.

The Mongol Empire had enjoyed such prestige that medieval women of Europe imitated it with the hennin, a large cone-shaped headdress that sat towards the back of the head rather than rising straight up from it as among the Mongols. With no good source of peacock feathers, European noblewomen generally substituted gauzy streamers flowing in the wind at the top. (Weatherford: Secret History of the Mongol Queens)
