PINKtober - Breast Cancer Awareness Projects

Our little town celebrates PINKtober: Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a big way! Each year the month-long fundraising celebration seems to get bigger and bigger. Our varsity football players are wearing pink socks during their games this month and we are having a Ta-Ta Trot 5K next week with the proceeds going toward breast cancer research. We kicked off the month of October with a paper lantern launch last weekend... Anyone in the community could purchase a lantern for $5.00. Volunteers from the local fire department helped people light their lanterns and get them lifted up into the air and heaven-bound. Our friend, Nick, a fire fighter helped Claire get her lantern up in the air! Nick helped Hugh light his lantern too! And there it goes! The event was called "Spirit In the Sky." It was beautiful and quite touching. The PINKtober committee in town asked me if my students could do some pink projects to hang in the businesses in town to "paint the town pink!" Of course, I agreed and was delighted to have our students be involved in this community project for such an important cause. One of my 2nd grade students, Chloee (and daughter of my friend Tracey) made this beautiful melted crayon project using different shades of pink. Many of the students used these words on their projects. I gave them a cardboard circle to get started and a business owner in town donated TONS of pink patterned scrapbook paper, construction paper, buttons, gems, ribbon, flowers, and stickers. Their creativity then kicked in... This one says "Hoppe and Affecshon" translated as "Hope and Affection!" I thought that was just precious. This one is just beautiful! I love the ribbon in the middle. My 4th grade students made 12 x 12 inch grids with instructions to make each little square different. Again, the kids were provided with different patterned paper, flowers, stickers, markers, colored pencils, crayons, and glitter! Oh, the glitter! They all LOVED the glitter! The PINKtober committee members hung the projects in store windows and put many of the 12 x 12 grids together to make one big "quilt." I had one of my classroom volunteer moms cut out large ribbons from white card stock. The second graders then used a water and glue mix to "paint" pink tissue paper onto the ribbons. They turned out beautiful and since they are big (about 2 feet tall) they are quite impressive looking when hung up! The PINKtober committee has a panel of judges - all breast cancer survivors - who will be judging the projects and awarding gift cards as prizes! I know it will be hard for them choose the best ones! They are all very creative and our town looks beautiful in pink! ********************************************************* Be sure to enter the current giveaway for a $25.00 shop credit at The Rusty Owl!
