Every six months we welcome four to five recent design graduates to our studio to work alongside us as part of our vibrant fellowship program. Roundel by Molly Brooks. 2008/01. Given a prompt "a book that demonstrates the progression of time," I made a carousel-bound tribute to Doctor Who, a long-running British sci-fi classic about adventures of a mysterious time-travelling alien known only as 'the Doctor.' Digital drawings of each actor that had portrayed him at time of binding (10), each paired w/ an image of the evolving interior of his spaceship. Blue hardcase is debossed to resemble exterior of the spaceship, a blue phonebox.

This book was the final structure we learned in Emily Martin's Artists Books class. It was a challenge getting the math right, but very rewarding to see it actually work and fit together like it should! Each panel was letterpress printed in layers, which means that each image took about 4-5 press runs to complete. A registration nightmare! But I managed to work out a system after the first image run and the rest of them worked out pretty okay. The idea was that the final image should…
