On April 26, 1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the town of Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded. The explosion took place at 1:23am while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. Two workers were killed instantly. 40 hours later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate, and most never returned; by that time, many of the residents had suffered varying degrees of radiation poisoning.

When we walked onto the plutonium array inside the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear wasteland, almost nothing went wrong.

Chernobyl - Commissioned in phases with four reactor (RBMK-100, each capable of producing 1,000 megawatts of electric power) from 1977-1983. The four reactors together produced 10% of Ukraine’s electricity. Reactor number 5 was around 70% completed and was ready to go online, November 1986.

This was my first pitch for an info graphic in the Stern magazine. It shows a vertical slice of the nuclear reactor right before the explosion.
