Alphabet Alliteration Poem: Poetry Unit Art, Reading, Teaching Poetry, Spelling, Writing Activities, Teaching Writing, Writing Lessons, Teaching Literacy, Poetry Activities Elementary

I like to spend a couple weeks each year teaching my students about poetry. We do a number of fun activities in addition to reading and writing different poems. We have a poetry battle, rank poetry, make a poetry journal, and much more! Here is a look into my poetry unit.... To kick off my poetry unit I have my students each complete this KWL Chart about Poetry. We then discuss what poetry is, what a poet's purpose is, what poems can have, etc. I use and display these posters during my unit…

Colors and Kindergarten: Color Poems Pre K, English, Reading, Worksheets, Color Words Kindergarten, Color Activities, Color Of The Week, Teaching Colors, Learning Colors

Then you sing them at home, in the shower, in your head all the time! The good news is: They work! Kids learn how to spell their color words very easily when they learn it in song. (Funny, that actually works for almost anything.) I was growing tired of my old color word poem charts in my classroom and decided to make…

Well I’m back in the swing of things. The first three days were pretty good. I have 16 lovely first graders, and I think we’re going to have a great year. This week we worked on routines and expectations. My students loved the Marshmallow Toes! Thanks to Kelli at Castles and Crayons! Here are some more pictures of my classroom. Ignore the sorting bins for supplies. My Important Times wall and clock! Thanks to Mrs. Lemons at Step into Second Grade and Lauren at Just Add Clipart. This year…

This is my 4th installment in my Teaching Colors series and you will find that by the time December rolled around, I decided to stop taking photos of everything. It was not really by choice, but rather by necessity as our classroom got busier and busier! Paint Chip Poetry - Students pick a color and write a poem about using a metaphor and 3 smilies. Link includes a prewriting graphic organizer. High School, Bulletin Boards, Third Grade, Classroom Ideas, Fourth Grade, Art, 4th Grade Classroom, Elementary, Primary Education

I love using paint chips! I have used them in the past for books marks, reading incentives, and for brainstorming synonyms. I used them last week to write Color Poems. The kids wrote a metaphor and three similes describing a color. They came out awesome! Check out my color poetry post from last year! I read some trade books and we talked about how colors represent emotions and feelings. I read the books and used the chart. The next thing that the kids did was pick a paint chip. They used the…
