Placed adjacent to temples of nature and of the fertility god Dionysus, the orchestra was used for dramatic performances, which, together with a procession and sacrifice, composed the annual spring festival of the god. The theatre was first built in the 6th century BCE. Modified and expanded over the centuries, it is the oldest Greek theatre and is the site where some of the most famous Greek plays from antiquity were first performed. The College of Saint Elizabeth is continuing an 82-year-old tradition by producing a student performance of a Greek tragedy every four years at the Greek Theatre, an authentic outdoor theatre built in 1932 as a reproduction of the Theatre of Dionysus in Athens, where these plays were first performed in the fifth century B.C.
