Greek theaters had large semicircle amphitheaters for the audience and could be built into a hill.  In the center of the amphitheater is an orchestra.  Behind the orchestra is the skene which served as a place for actors to change masks and costumes. Theatre of Palmyra    Palmyra's Theatre was, until the 1950's, buried beneath the sand, however it has been restored continuously since then.    The freestanding stage facade of the theatre itself is designed along the lines of a palace entrance, complete with a royal door and smaller doors on either side.    During the Palmyra Festival, which runs from the end of April to the beginning of May, music and dance performances are held in the theatre.
