At 2.2 Billion Years Old, This is the Oldest Impact Crater on Earth — Curiosmos

Researchers have discovered the oldest impact crater on the surface of Earth called Yarrabubba in Australia. The crater dates back some 2.2 billion years.

Meteor (Barringer) crater, in the Arizona desert, is over 1.1 km (0.7 mi) in diameter, and represents only a 3-10 MegaTon release of energy. A 300-400 meter asteroid strike would release 10-100 times the energy. Image credit: USGS/D. Roddy.

No matter what NASA researchers say, that simply isn't how probabilities -- or asteroids -- work.

The lack of impact craters on Io in any spacecraft images at any resolution attests to the high resurfacing rate and the dominant role of active volcanism in shaping its surface. High-temperature hot spots detected by the Galileo Solid-State Imager usually correlate with darkest materials on the surface, suggesting active volcanism. #Nasa #IO #Jupiter #solarsystem #Mars #Moon #Outerspace #science #sciencefiction #space #geek #nerd #map #topography #rocket #marswalkers
