A YEAR IN JAPAN

A Year in Japan (Princeton Architectural Press) is a book I wrote and illustrated about Japanese visual culture. It features things I thought were especially beautiful, surprising, or moving (there are two spreads devoted just to socks––Japan is sock paradise!). You can see a lot of what has influenced my sock designs (and my general approach to art and life) in this book. (I'd be happy to inscribe it––please let me know who I should inscribe it to and any relevant information about the person or occasion in the comments section at checkout.)

Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yokai / Edition 1 - Paperback

Water sprites, mountain goblins, shape-shifting animals, and the monsters known as yôkai have long haunted the Japanese cultural landscape. This history of the strange and mysterious in Japan seeks out these creatures in folklore, encyclopedias, literature, art, science, games, manga, magazines, and movies, exploring their meanings in the Japanese cultural imagination and offering an abundance of valuable and, until now, understudied material. Michael Dylan Foster tracks yôkai over three centuries, from their appearance in seventeenth-century natural histories to their starring role in twentieth-century popular media. Focusing on the intertwining of belief and commodification, fear and pleasure, horror and humor, he illuminates different conceptions of the "natural" and the "ordinary" and sheds light on broader social and historical paradigms-and ultimately on the construction of Japan as a nation.Product DetailsISBN-13: 9780520253629 Publisher: University of California Press Publication Date: 11-03-2008 Pages: 312 Product Dimensions: 5.90(w) x 8.90(h) x 0.90(d)About the Author Michael Dylan Foster is Assistant Professor of Folklore and East Asian Cultures at Indiana University.
