It was on June 23, 1996 that the Nintendo 64 made its debut — in Japan, that is. We wouldn't see it on this side of the Pacific for another three months. But today is its proper birthday, and 20 years is a significant enough anniversary that we should probably just take a moment to remember just how awesome this console was — and is.

The classic Nintendo Entertainment System came with a robot, a light-sensing video gun, 'true-to-life' graphics and a library of games. Here's a look!

The NES controller might be the worst feeling controller, but it's the best looking by far! Been itching to make this ever since I brought home my old NES from my parents place. Modeled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter and Photoshop. Rendered in Arnold.

It was more or less muscle memory: put in a fresh pair of double-A batteries, slide in the square, gray cartridge of your favorite game into the open slot, then flip on the little power switch on the top. Then, it was time to smile as the red light fired up on the left side of the green-tinted LCD screen as the word “Nintendo” descended from the top of the screen and stopped in place
