PHPT is a common endocrine (hormonal) disease caused by the overproduction and release of parathyroid hormone (PTH). PHPT is caused by a benign growth (adenoma) on one of the parathyroid glands in 90% of cases. The risk of having PHPT increases with age, so as many as 1% of <60 year old persons may be affected.
