Much of California’s southern Bay Area is known for expensive real estate, tech companies, and aerospace engineers — what’s not usually talked about is its salt content. Yet the salt industry has been an active part of the area for over a century. As one flies into the San Francisco airport, evidence of it appears as a richly colored quilt of briny pools in acid green, ochre, and toxic-looking reds.

This session is a continuation of my project to take baseline photographs of the current landscape in the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve’s Phase II project area. This next phase of salt pond restoration is located just south of Phase I, incorporating the area between Old Alameda Creek and the Alameda Creek Flood Control Channel.
