Every four years I go through this ritual: I try to get extended coverage of the World Cup from sports editors with little sympathies for soccer. In 2002, the USMNT advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to powerhouse Germany. Pablo Mastroeni, a Phoenix native, made the roster and was captain of the team. This opened up more WC coverage at the Republic.
