Robert Indiana-inspired Block Words for Classroom Decor

For this lesson I began by talking to my 3rd graders about the Pop artist Robert Indiana. We talked about how he became famous for his really simple images that often included a short word. From there we talked about his 'LOVE' series and then looked at a variety of pieces he created. The first 'LOVE' piece came in 1964 when Indiana created the design for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art. Then in 1973, the US Postal Service put the design on a stamp! Later on Indiana was even…

Square 1 Art Kindergarten Lesson

Square 1 Art kindergarten Art lesson I always do my Square 1 Art at the beginning of the year so families can order things in time for Christmas. This can be a challenge since kindergarteners have limited skills at the beginning of the year! I came across this lesson here The Clever Feather. I printed off hearts on each cardstock the company provides for the students. My only direction was to fill the whole page with color. Since it was the first two weeks of school I had to teach the basics…

Our students are so excited about having the opportunity to participate in Square 1 Art again this year! It is a program where each child designs a square artwork, sends it to the Square 1 Art company, and then this company prints each child's work onto a whole sheet of professional looking stickers with that child's art on it! The best part is that EVERY child receives these stickers for FREE! When these stickers come home, they will be accompanied by an order form. Families have the option…

Art. Eat. Tie Dye. Repeat.: 2nd Grade | Art fundraiser, Elementary art, Elementary art projects

My last rotation of classes had to take a little hiatus on the art projects we've been working on (and so very close to finishing) to help the PTA and classroom teachers out with an Original Works project. If you don't know what Original Works is check it out here. It's very much like Artsonia, but only focuses on creating one art project. It's a great fundraiser for the school and the orders usually come in around the holidays so they can make for fun gifts. All of these projects were one…

Elements of the Art Room | Elementary art, Elementary art projects, Elementary art rooms

4th Grade created these colorful artworks by using oil pastels and erasers! This lesson was inspired by The Art of Ed blog, and was a hit! Here's how we did it, but you can also check out the Art of Ed's blog for more details! They each chose a shape, traced around that shape, and colored them in with oil pastels. We like to use Crayola oil pastels the best! After they finished filling the paper up with color, they took the eraser, started in the middle, and drug the color outwards, creating…

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE ART ROOM??: 3rd Grade Sunflowers | 3rd grade art lesson, 3rd grade art, Sunflower art project

The 3rd grade students learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh through a video that showed a little girl interviewing Van Gogh. We also read the book, The Man with the Yellow House. We looked at Van Gogh’s artwork and talked about how he expressed his feelings through his art. We discussed how different colors create different moods or feelings in a painting. Van Gogh used an impasto technique, which is short, thick brushstrokes. Students learned that Van Gogh’s favorite color was yellow…
