Surface area is a such a fun topic to explore in the middle school math classroom! To really understand what surface area means, students need to interact with actual three-dimensional objects. Before we talk about the math formulas or how to calculate, we spend time discovering how to find surface area in our own ways. Read along to learn how I do it! That's right! ALL about NETS! I don't know about you but for some reason SURFACE AREA totally throws my kiddos for a loop. Like they have to find all the area of that whole big shape thing and it's just a lot sometimes. So FOUNDATIONS become really important. Especially laying a foundation for learning all about 3d shapes such as rectangular prisms, cylinders, triangular prisms, pyramids, and all that jazz. It's time to bring in boxes and rip them apart to see their net, pringles canisters…

Last week we were learning about surface area in my three regular math classes (we did this earlier in my accelerated class). I had my accelerated students (in groups of three) make a net of a rectangular prism. They had to measure in inches or centimeters and label each edge of their net, they also labeled each face with the letters A-F). On a piece of looseleaf they had to give the area of each face and then give the surface area of the whole prism. Completed nets from my accelerated math…

Surface area can be a very tricky concept for 7th grade minds. It has a lot of moving parts in it and sometimes it can feel like a little too too much. I feel like with this topic you really have to go back to finding area, and then work your way through a forest […]
