Townes Van Zandt (full name: John Townes Van Zandt, born: (March 7, 1944, Fort Worth, Texas – January 1, 1997, Smyrna, Tennessee) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Many of his songs are considered Americana standards of their genre. He never had a successful album or single and even had difficulty keeping his recordings in print. In 1983 Emmylou Harris popularized his song "Pancho and Lefty He spent life was spent touring various bars and sleeping on friends couches.
