Meanwhile, as good Balinese traditional painting is becoming rarer, when we see one, let us immerse ourselves in its special aesthetics. When looking at a work, let us discard all Western/modern cultural bias. Let your eye roam over the surface, gaze at a detail – say, the face of a woman – dig into it, identify a still smaller detail – in the folds of the woman's shawl – and then roam again in quest of yet another detail. Ida Bagus Putra, better known as Gustra, knows how to record exotic scenes. But he also knows why he is doing so. His perspective is that of an insider. He gives visual information that are deeper and more complete, because, he know the why and the how of all aspects of his culture, so is able to wait for the right moment to shoot the expected scene. Prof. Jean Couteau Ph.D.

"In the last 3 years, I am interested and exploring the line elements in the works of my drawing. In exploring the line as an aesthetic element, I found the passion and excitement combined with my own experiences which are then sublimated in the works that, actually is a theme inspired by the paintings of garden Kertagosa in Klungkung, Bali."
