Charlotte's second novel was begun in 1846 in Manchester when she was nursing her father after an operation. Published in 1847 by Smith Elder, 'Jane Eyre' was an instant success and attracted the attention of William Makepeace Thackeray and other men and women of the literary world. By January 1848 it had gone into its second edition and her fame as an author was established. Charlotte married in 1854 but died when she was with child in 1855.

"Miss Temple, teachers, and children, you all see this girl?" F. D. Bedford (1932) The attention to detail here is very pleasing to me.

"The couple were thus revealed to me clearly." Fritz Eichenberg (1947) Eichenberg is unusual among illustrators of Jane Eyre in that he twice chooses to depict Rochester's perspective; usually, the illustrators focus on Jane.
