Edward "Butch" O'Hare, who was raised in Chicago, became an early war hero in 1942, when he single-handedly shot down five Japanese planes. O'Hare, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his feat, was killed in 1943. The city later renamed that out-of-the-way airport on the Northwest Side in his honor.
