Longmen Grottoes, China - Buddhas and Bodhisattvas carved into 1,350 caves and 750 niches along the limestone bank of the Yi River form thousands of examples of sophisticated Chinese art from the fifth through the ninth centuries. Some are more than 25 feet tall, and the total number is estimated to be 110,000. One cave even displays numerous carved medical prescriptions.
