To push their products, these advertisements invoke some of the worst gender stereotypes, depicting women as terrible drivers, brainless beauties, and kitchen-dwellers. Women of the twentieth century, I sincerely hope you did not put up with this nonsense.

Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride - This phrase, surprisingly, was used to sell Listerine mouthwash! Listerine employed the personal experience of girls who desperately wanted to settle down but seemed to be left on the shelf. The 1920’s ad portrays a situation and a possible explanation for the lack of success these girls had. The advertisement sold millions of bottles of mouthwash and also gave the English language a new saying!
