Lisbeth Zwerger

Lisbeth Zwerger is one of my favorite illustrators of all time. I adore her use of color and line, the old fashioned feel to her work. Her art is full of charm, romance and humor. As a young art student in Vienna in the 70s, Lisbeth freely told others that she wanted to illustrate books. She has been warned about difficulties involved in finding work, and criticized for not being modern enough. Discouraged, confused, not knowing which direction her work should take, she gave up drawing for a…

Thumbeline, (Thumbelina), Lisbeth Zwerger

"Children must often contend with people and things that are so much larger or stronger than they are, and even grownups can feel pushed about by the giant toads and moles and Junebugs of this world. It is no surprise, then, that the story of tiny Thumbeline has captured the imagination of readers and listeners ever since it was first published in 1835." (Back cover of Thumbeline) Today's vintage children's book is Thumbeline, or as many of us know it, Thumbelina. This version of the Hans…

Arthur Rackham

I really cannot talk about my illustration inspirations and influences without mentioning Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939)... His illustrations was the perfect backdrop to old fairytales, slightly dark, slightly muted colors, slightly surreal... his illustrations are straight from dreams, and subconscious, the stuff fairytales and myths are made of. It's always cloudy and windy in Arthur Rackham's images... I simply love it. :-)

David Frankland

When I saw this cat I was... sold. This is David Frankland's vision of the Cheshire Cat. So I went to see what else David Frankland has done, and found out that he's one of my favorite cover artists! His silhouettes are absolute wonderful :-) Reminds me so much of Arthur Rackham: And there's Himmapaan: or Niroot Puttapipat, as he's called.

World of Froud Some other artists that come to mind: Victoria Francés, who mentions Froud as one of her ideals (Some other of her favorites: Luis Royo, Alan Lee, Joseph Vargo, David Delamare, John Bolton) Some say this is by Froud, others say it's by James C. Christensen... This is a collaboration of Alan Lee and Brian Froud Arthur Rackham comes to mind :-D Tony diTerlizzi
