Bertram Lloyd Marshall was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in 1936 and was known as a genius scientific researcher and a madman of steelpan. By 1956 he had accomplished the most significant development in today’s steelpan tone by tuning the notes by octaves and introducing complex tuning techniques that produced harmonics, giving the steelpan its complex sound. He introduced the six bass on the road, the use of canopies to protect the pans from the sun, and introduced the steelpan to the Church.
