CUBES

This week the students have been learning how important it is to understand a word problem, develop a plan to solve it by using a variety of strategies, create a number sentence and reflecting on their work. A great way to practice this process is by using the acronym CUBES. The students created a foldable to always look back on and help them when encountering word problems. They used it when working in their Problem Solving Journal. Cooperation is key! Students were able to create a poster…

Snowball Fight!!!! And a FREEBIE! :)

Hang in there, friends... it's ALMOST Friday!! Tomorrow is Dr. Seuss Day...or DEAR Day...and PJ Day at my school & let me tell you, the kids are pumped! They are allowed to wear their PJ's, bring a pillow, blanket/towel, and a stuffed animal for our celebration. We have lots of actual work to be done, but it's also such a fun day to just curl up and read some of our favorite books. Look what I found on Pinterest... Isn't this a great idea?? I think my kiddos will love trying it out…

So, I know, I haven’t blogged, in like FOREVER!! It’s been a rough couple of months…okay, seriously, my life hit crisis mode and I abandoned everything! Yes, life, blogging, teaching, friends, etc. It makes me super sad, but that is how it is and I can’t and wouldn't change a thing. I've left teaching - sort of. I'm currently teaching preschool (yes, I love it!) rather than in the public school setting. There were a lot of things that drove me to make this decision. I won't get into all…

More Test Prep

Yeah!! Finally Friday!! We made it through our first week back from a long spring break (the kids had off 1 1/2 weeks). We spent the week learning a few new concepts in math and spent the rest of our days reviewing for the upcoming EOG's. Yesterday's post included the math strategy poster CUBES. And already I have had our curriculum coach come in and check it out as we put the strategy into action today. A colleague in 4th grade has already made her own CUBES anchor chart - check out how…

Math Thinking Patterns and CUBES strategy

Hello Everyone! We have been working hard on word problems in math and using our thinking patterns (Some-Some More, Some- Some Went Away and all the organizers that go along with those) to help us solve. I love that our district supports and encourages us to teach about thinking patterns. I did not learn this way of solving math problems when I was a kid, and always had trouble with math. We simply learned to memorize facts. I want my students to have many many more options when working on…
