Upstate New York
Beauty of upstate NY
Overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, is Lyndhurst, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. The architectural brilliance of the residence, designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, is complemented by the park-like landscape of the estate and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts.
This is the home of the great Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. He named his home Olana. It was a fine example of Victorian-era domestic architecture, but Church incorporated Middle Eastern touches after a trip to Beirut, Jerusalem and Damascus. The result is a haute bohemian fantasy - part folly, part delightful home that he called "Persian, adapted to the Occidental".
