This textile was purchased on Samosir Island on Lake Toba, in the Batak region of Sumatra, Indonesia in about 1993. It is a Sibolang Ulos shoulder cloth. The Ulos Sibolang has ceremonial importance as a means to establish bonds between famiies, protect the wearer and bring good luck. The ikat pattern was achieved by dying the warp threads in pre-planned sequences before setting up the loom. The blue dye is natural indigo.
