Memorial to the Australian Light Horse (Tamworth Waler Memorial). Bronze statue of an Australian WW1 trooper saying farewell to his Waler horse (a mare is shown) in the deserts of the Middle East. The statue was sculpted by Tanya Bartlett of Newcastle. None of the horses who were shipped overseas returned to Australia. This is an old photo of a dying soldier from WWI who insisted on seeing his horse upon his death. What a touching example of the extraordinary relationship between a man and his horse.

Trooper Bert Main and Songster - the oldest horse to serve in WWI, seen here in 1915. Songster was issued to the Leicestershire Yeomanry at the start of WWI when the regiment was sent to France. When Main returned home at the war's end, Songster was kept working in France, he was eventually sent home to England for "disposal" in 1919. Sjt Main found Songster, bought him from the Army + placed him in the care of his friend, war veteran Sjt-Maj. Harry Poole, who owned a farm in Woodhouse Eaves...
