Hmmm... wish we could do this w/ the living room floor; it would probably solve the oak and pine board floor problem, but it wouldn't work with the rest of the house. Would it work for upstairs?

We finally got the stair rope brackets from England (yes, we ordered them from overseas) and 40' of inch and a half nylon rope from a ship chandlery on the East Coast...we were ready to install the super cool rope banister.
