Grace Brown hoped that the man she loved, Chester Gillette, would marry her after getting her pregnant, but instead he took her to an Adirondack resort, took her out on Moose Lake in a rowboat, shoved her overboard and battered her with an oar until she drowned. He was a good-looking cad who sold autographed photos of himself to fund his defense and buy some jailhouse luxuries. He was hanged, but Grace was still just as dead as before.
