An East German soldier helping a boy cross the newly formed ‘Berlin Wall,’ 1961. Despite given orders by the East German government to let no one pass, the soldier helped the boy through the barbwire. Cpt Maria Ivanovna Valley (1922-2010) flew 72 sorties in a Pe-2 dive bomber, dropped 45 tonnes of bombs, and shot down 3 enemy fighters. In 1944, she was deputy commander of the 125th Guards Bomber Regiment, 4rth Guards Bomber Division. In 1945, Valley's service to the USSR and her combat performance won her the top award of Hero of the Soviet Union.
